The menu at River and Woods is a feast for the senses. Picture starting your meal with their famed Carbonara Deviled Eggs, a luscious marriage of guanciale, Pecorino Romano, and freshly cracked black pepper that teases the palate with smoky, creamy richness. Or delight in the unique tang of the Montreal Duck Wings, glazed in a tantalizing unagi sauce and sprinkled with sesame seeds, delivering a perfect balance of sweet, savory, and umami flavors.
For brunch lovers, dishes like the velvety Baked Zimmer Challah French Toast and hearty Breakfast Burrito satisfy with comforting textures and bright, fresh ingredients. The Chicken and Waffles offer a classic combination elevated by imaginative seasoning and crisp execution, proving why this establishment has become a “crown jewel” in the Boulder dining scene.
As you move on to entrees, expect something truly special. The Rocky Mountain River Trout, served with sprouting cauliflower and roasted apples, captures the essence of the region’s terroir, with delicate flakiness balanced by earthy turmeric and mustard greens. Meanwhile, the Wagyu Flatiron Steak Frites delivers rich, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth indulgence paired with house fries and a zesty chimichurri – expertly crafted for those craving bold, savory satisfaction.
Don’t miss the Pork Belly Pastrami, where hickory-smoked Berkshire pork belly is artfully paired with rye berries and a caraway vinaigrette, offering a smoky, tangy crunch that lingers pleasantly on the palate. The Aunt Penny's Mac & Cheese provides a comforting, creamy counterpoint and is an ideal side or a dish to savor solo.
Complementing the food are thoughtful drinks like perfectly balanced mimosas and robust cocktails such as a Manhattan crafted with Redwood Empire Rye — a favorite among guests who appreciate a well-made libation. Their charcuterie boards and desserts, including the indulgent Miller Royale Cheesecake and Dulce de Leche Churros, round out the experience with just the right touch of sweetness.

We consider this restaurant the “Crown Jewel” of Boulder and the Denver area. In two days, we tried everything on the menu and were consistently impressed by its taste and presentation. The only picture we took was of the deviled eggs. We devoured the food so quickly that pictures became an afterthought. The staff was pleasant, professional, and understood the restaurant’s mission. After 2 days we became friends and it felt like we knew them for 20 years. We truly hope our paths cross again! Hats off to Maddie, Gabby, Rob, and Nos (chef) - with all our adoration, Jennifer, Steve “The Grad,” and Matthew from Chicago!
First time in Boulder and we found this gem of a restaurant via Google Maps. We dined at the bar and felt right at home with Maddie & Rob. I had a great start with a Manhattan made with Redwood Empire Rye. It got better from there! We had Duck Wings (which were so good) to start and moved to the Rocky Mountain River Trout and the Pasture Raised Chicken. Maddie paired up a beautiful Nivarius Tempranillo Blanco that was spot on for both the trout and the chicken. We finished with the Chocolate Mousse paired with a Castro Ventosa Spanish red. This was a food and wine lovers primo experience! The trout and sides were outstanding and the chicken dish with the greens was excellent. Maddie knows her wines and has some tasty and interesting choices. Pro tip, book a dinner for two at the bar! We will come back! Sorry, no photos of trout and chicken as we were into the meal.
What a darling and inviting place this is! Every single staff member was kind and said hello and thanks for being here. Our server Andy was excellent - perfect timing, great suggestions and super friendly and welcoming. We came for Easter brunch and it was delicious. My husband loved the Brunch burger and I couldn’t resist the biscuits and gravy- so good! One of the highlights of the meal was starting with the Alpine Brunch Board sure to please any foodie. Such careful attention to detail… you can tell they take pride in what they do here! Also recommend the Bloody Mary with the pepper vodka and the Paloma. The bartenders definitely know what they are doing.
Cozy spot, nice ambiance, and food was fairly good, especially the steak itself and the pork belly/pastrami dish. Did not really care for the chimichurri or accompanying fries. $48 seems pricey to not have loved every component, but they did a good cook on the meat. The cornbread was rough. 6% kitchen surcharge/high prices in general. Service was very hasty, and I was sent home with a metal ramekin thrown on top of my expensive leftovers.
Wonderful restaurant, delicious food, and amazing team! I organized a group dinner for 25 people and we couldn’t be happier with the experience! The family style dinner allowed us to stay within budget while giving us opportunity to try different appetizers, salad, 3 different main courses, and two desserts. Strongly recommended!
river and woods has quickly become my new favorite dinner spot in boulder. the menu is so creative and delicious — every dish feels thoughtful and full of flavor. the atmosphere is warm, inviting, and perfectly boulder with its mix of cozy and modern. the staff makes you feel right at home, and it’s the kind of place you want to linger over dinner with friends or a glass of wine. truly a gem that i can’t wait to return to again and again.
It’s all about the food. Extremely creative. New and interesting flavors and ingredients. Creativity. Must try Lamb Birria Carrot Pumpkin Cocktail Trout with Cauliflower Gnocchi extraordinaire Many others. Didn’t get a 5 because of deviled eggs which were not fresh. Also, their facility was nice, but could sometimes be cold in the back room. This place is now on our list.
We enjoyed the dinner here with our 13-year-old son on a Friday night. We sat in the back patio area which featured live music from a guitar player. We appreciated that the music was a nice volume that did not overwhelm conversation. Food quality and preparation was solid. The service was excellent. Ambience is really nice with the lighting and decor. A really nicely done small restaurant that has good food with a casual vibe.
